A Guide to Air Compressor Safety

For many businesses, an air compressor is an essential piece of equipment that the entire facility heavily depends on.

The Placement of Air Compressors

It’s  recommended to keep air compressors outdoor but is ok to install them indoor as long as it’s in an area with clean, dry airflow. However, gas air compressors must always be placed outdoors.

It’s also important to remember that moisture can damage your machinery and cause dangerous electrical issues, so even when placed indoors, the compressor should be protected against wet conditions.

Always Connect the Air Compressor to A Grounded Outlet

An air compressor typically uses a large amount of power. And this power should be supplied in the most ideal condition possible. If the compressor is plugged into a power outlet that isn’t properly grounded this could cause equipment failure or bodily harm.

Personal Protective Gear Is Always Recommended

An air compressor should never be approached without proper safety gear. This includes gloves, impact-resistant goggles as well as hearing protection. The staff at a facility should always be trained on the importance of wearing the safety ensemble because any sort of direct exposure such as compressed air applied on bare skin can cause a serious injury even at the lowest pressure. Since the compressor is also pretty loud, it’s highly recommended that hearing protection is used.

Use the Air Compressor with Caution

Carry out a mini safety check before using your air compressor. You need to check the hoses and oil level, and whether it’s plugged in properly, and so on. Hose fitting should be tight,

Don’t add or change oil or any kind of fuel while the compressor is running or right after it’s been used. The unit can catch fire if you do this.

Have It Inspected Often

It’s essential for all facilities to conduct regular inspections to ensure not only safety but also efficiency. Ideally, during inspections, the technician should check everything from the hoses to the power supply and oil level. In case any issues are discovered, repairs should be scheduled right away before the safety of the facility and its workers If you’ve not had your air compressor inspected in a while or think you may need to replace it, get in touch with us at WCI Electric.
